Barley news Germany: Winter barley harvest is almost completed

The harvest has been disrupted by frequent rainfall that has halted combine progress for several days, according to Home-Grown Cereals Authority (HGCA), which released a report on harvest progress in Germany on July 27.

Winter barley harvest is almost completed: by July 26, 90 to 95% has been cut. In Schleswig-Holstein (north of the country), 50% of winter barley remains to be harvested and 15 to 50% in Thuringen and Saxony. Yield results are still 10 to 15% lower than last year depending on region. In general, winter barley quality is good to very good in the south and southwest but it is heterogeneous and not so good in the north-east (mixed test weights).

By July 26, about 10% of spring barley has been harvested with 15 to 20% cut in Baden Württemberg and in Bavaria and 10% in Rheinland-Pfalz. The first results show a 20% decrease in yields compared to last year and low screenings for malting barley.
